Gordimer’s story begins with a family consisting of a mother, father, and son that live in upper class suburbs during an apartheid. Their suburb begins to become increasingly dangerous. The family in the end increase security by adding a wall topped with razor wire and other measures. In the end of the story, the son tries to play a game in the razor wire and gets mangled.
Estevan Contreras Ms. Lehmann English 1-1A 21 September 2018 Summary of “ Rituals of Memory” “Rituals of Memory” is a short essay written by Kimberly M. Blaeser that argues that our relationship to family and community shape who we are. Blaeser giver a metaphor comparing those relationships to her friend’s curly tangled hair. She supports this claim by referencing her memories of Memorial Days spent honoring soldiers and Indian warriors with the Legionnaires. Blaeser provides examples of her double life, including her German Catholic teachings and her Native Americans rituals. Blaeser concludes that our stories and memories of our family and community make us who we are.
Reflection 1. List one thing you've learned from writing this paper that you can apply to other writing assignments. What will that look like?
From all three of the summaries I learned how to be really descriptive in a short amount of words and paragraphs. I can apply this to other paper by using them to reduce my really long ideas into short and interesting pieces of work
2. Identify a specific revision you were asked to make and explain why (this can be at any stage of the writing process). How did you revise? What did you learn?
One specific revision I made in all three summaries is the lack of commas and apostrophes. I learned when and where to use apostrophes and commas properly.
3. What are the conventions of a summary and how did you meet those in this assignment?
Summaries are usually short and not necessarily descriptive but short and to the point. I did exactly that in these papers and I believe I did exceedingly well.
4. Given more time to work on this assignment, how would you improve it?
If given more time I would take more time with my grammar and make better decisions on what to write.
5, What is one thing you're proud of in this paper?
In these papers I’m most proud that I had few grammar mistakes and that I did really well following the rules of summaries.
